Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve had problems falling and staying asleep. I’m the kind of person that counts down how many hours of sleep I’ll get if I fall asleep right now (which inevitably leads to me tossing and turning, wide awake for the next three hours).
And then, when I do fall asleep, an hour later I’m right back up, stressing about work or the kids or something stupid I did in high school. It’s like I can’t turn my brain off.
It got so bad that I actually had to speak to someone about it, and I was diagnosed with anxiety.
But I consider myself a proactive person, and my sleep-deficiency problems have cost me more than I’d like. So I decided to do something about it, and I dedicated myself to finding the solution for the problem.
“I will not suffer one more night of tossing and turning,” I told myself.
So I dove into research. Along the way, I stumbled across a surprising fact. A study released by the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania found that roughly 25% of all Americans experiences acute insomnia each year. That’s one in four!
Suddenly, I wasn’t doing research just for myself anymore. I was doing an experiment to help all my readers experience a higher-quality night of sleep.
So I started trying different methods and marking my results.
First, I got a white noise machine.
Honestly, right off the bat I knew I wasn’t going to love it. My mind just focuses in on the noise, and it ends up having the opposite effect of what’s intended.
Then I tried earplugs. Now, my husband doesn’t snore or anything, but I figured just drowning out the occasional car passing or dog barking would help me. But the thing is, it’s really hard to fall asleep with earplugs in! They’re super uncomfortable! And I like to sleep on my side, so there’s just this soft cork slowly pressing into my ear. No thanks!
I ended up getting a prescription to Xanax to treat my anxiety. But once again, I didn’t love it. Even though it helped me get to sleep and stay asleep, I didn't like depending on drugs, and it left me feeling groggy the next day. I just didn’t feel like myself.
Throughout my research, I kept seeing articles talking about how there was a new blanket called the Odyssey Blanket that’s supposed to be good for your sleep and anxiety. But even though I saw it again and again, I always brushed it off because I couldn’t possibly see how a blanket would help.
But the more I read, the more it seemed like this blanket might be a good idea. Here’s what I found out about it…
What is the Odyssey Blanket… And how does it work?
The Odyssey Blanket is known as a “weighted blanket” (not to be confused with a comforter). Put simply, the weight adds pressure while you’re laying down, which makes you feel like your being swaddled. This comforts the body and mind, making it easier to fall asleep and ridding you of the stress you’ve built up over the day.
The reason the blanket works, is because it directly affects your subconscious. When you were in the womb, you felt a constant pressure around you. It was literally the comfort of your mother, 24/7. You ever notice how babies need to be swaddled or they’ll get stressed out and cry? It’s because we humans are naturally comforted by that feeling of being wrapped with some physical pressure.
“The deep pressure of the blanket makes you feel like you’re being hugged or swaddled,” says Irina Zhdanova, MD. “When you’re hugged, you feel more secure.”
She adds that weighted blankets also restrict movement during sleep, making it harder for you to move around and inadvertently disturb your sleep.
The Odyssey Blanket weighs 15 lbs., and utilizes hypoallergenic glass beads which help the blanket conform more snuggly to your form.
Who is benefitting from the Odyssey Blanket?
People all over the world are singing the praises of the Odyssey Blanket, calling it, “the only reason I can fall asleep at night.”
Here are just a few of the reasons someone might benefit from the Odyssey Blanket:
- Trouble Sleeping/Insomnia
- Trouble Staying Asleep Through the Night
- Tossing & Turning Interfering with Quality of Sleep
- Stress & Anxiety
- Restless Leg Syndrome
- PTSD
- ADHD or Autism in Children
- A Better Alternative to Medication
But… Is it Really Worth All This Hype?
So far, the Odyssey Blanket has sold over 4 million units directly to consumers, even without the help of being sold in stores. Odyssey has been SELLING OUT every time new stock becomes available, it’s become THAT popular.
And, it’s all from word of mouth. People are loving it so much that they’re posting all over Instagram and telling everyone they know about it!
The Odyssey Blanket has easily developed a cult following. With over 6,500 5-star reviews, here’s what customers are saying:
Exactly as described and marketed
“I can't speak on the individual merits of weighted blankets for everyone; what I do know is that I have been intrigued by them for some time. As someone who is prone to anxiety and sleeplessness, getting a good night's rest has been an elusive goal. But, these blankets are really quite expensive, and I was never quite sure if it would live up to its cost. I took the plunge on this one, and this is what I think:
After about a week of use, I feel like the blanket works incredibly well. I know it will vary from person to person, but I've been sleeping 8-9 hours a night, falling asleep faster, tossing and turning less, and feeling better in the morning. I place it beneath the sheets and comforter, with the textured side down. I find the weight can actually be a little much in some body positions, and it has lead to me sleeping on my back, something I never did before. This, however, has been a pleasant development: the blanket in addition to the position feels a lot like shivasana at the end of a yoga session, very meditative and relaxing. The weight also seems to be at an optimal distribution in this arrangement. I will say that the addition of the blanket to my bedtime routine has made me very aware of my 'sleep hygiene,' in that I lay the blanket out on the bed before sleeping, and get right in and go to bed, no more staying up for hours on my phone, no more watching YouTube or Netflix before sleeping. I remove it in the morning and fold it up when I make the bed. Very nice, and very effective.”
Using it for under a week and seen tremendous results
“Just got this today for my son who deals with anxiety sometimes. I’ve been using the blanket for a few hours and I am very impressed so far. It seems well made, was packaged wonderfully, has no odor, is soft and is very warm but not hot (I can’t stand being hot under covers). I am experiencing the relaxing effect of the blanket. I feel like it is going to hold up well and assuming it does, we will be buying more.
Update: my son has been using it for just under a week and we have seen tremendous results. He is sleeping better and longer, wakes up more rested and in a better mood. It definitely is helping us start the school year off right!”
So Calming!
“This blanket is very soothing! It's very relaxing at the end of the day. I feel like my energy is becoming calmed and contained when I am stressed out. When I am extra stressed I fold the blanket lengthwise, doubling the weight and lay it over me for the first 15 minutes and my muscles begin to release, almost like a massage.”
To top it all off, several scientific studies have proven the effectiveness of the weighted blanket:
One study found that participants who wore a weighted blanket while undergoing a stressful medical procedure showed more activity in the part of the nervous system that is in control during times of low stress.
Another study found that 78% of adults who used a weighted blanket found it to be an effective calming mechanism.
A study on the effectiveness of weighted blankets for treating insomnia concluded that weighted blankets led to a calmer night’s sleep for those suffering from the sleep disorder.
And, weighted blankets such as the Odyssey Blanket have been proven to help elementary school aged children to pay more attention and fidget less in class. “It’s absolutely true that some kids benefit from compression,” says Lynelle Schneeberg, PsyD, board-certified sleep psychologist and director of the behavioral sleep program at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
After seeing the actual scientific proof on the effectiveness of the Odyssey Blanket, I finally felt comfortable trying it out for myself...
So, I ordered it online through their official website and it was at my house 4 days later.
When I opened it up, the thing I really noticed was how weird it felt holding it. Like, it doesn’t just feel like a heavy blanket. It almost feels like it’s trying to get away from you!
The blanket itself can cover a full-sized bed, but would not work for a queen-sized or king-sized bed. (So… I wasn’t going to be able to fit both my husband and myself under it.)
But, if what they said about it stopping your late-night fidgeting was true, then that wouldn’t be a problem, right? So, I decided that wasn’t too big a deal.
It really does feel nice to the touch, and when I first put it on I did immediately feel comforted.
I even journaled my experience with the Odyssey Blanket over the next few weeks…
Night 1 - Well, I guess I was wrong about not kicking it off. I found the blanket crumpled up at my feet this morning. Wondering if maybe this all was for nothing… On the plus side, the blanket wasn’t nearly as hot as I thought it would be. It was actually refreshingly cool and breathable, while it was still on me…
Night 4 - Very anxious day yesterday. Tons of deadlines looming and my husband and I are in the middle of buying our first home… at one point, I even had trouble catching my breath due to the anxiety… But, this morning, it’s like I woke up on Cloud 9! I seriously feel so good, and the blanket stayed on me all night! Also, my neck even felt a little loosened up! If this is all because of the blanket, I think I might have a winner on my hands…
Night 7 - Getting more and more used to the Odyssey Blanket. Not kicking it off in my sleep anymore, which is good. And, I’m not having trouble falling asleep at all anymore… I’m out almost as soon as my head hits the pillow. My husband says I fell asleep mid-conversation last night! No regrets!
Night 10 - Decided to try sleeping without the Odyssey Blanket last night, to see if I’d still fall asleep like I have been lately. Bad idea. Couldn’t fall asleep for 2 hours last night, thinking of all the stuff I had to get done today. Even ended up waking up twice in the night. Really feeling the effects of my poor decision right now…
Night 14 - Went back to the Odyssey Blanket, and… was out like a light. Woke up this morning feeling like I caught up on all the sleep I ever lost in my life. This thing is a keeper, that’s for sure.
To say I was happy with the Odyssey Blanket would be an understatement… And, I’ve even been using it while reading or using my phone on the couch. It’s like there’s an on/off switch in my body, and the blanket switches Relaxation Mode to “on” every time I use it.
How much does it cost? And, is it worth it?
There is currently a 50% off sale where you can order it on the official website for $99.95. And, in my experience, even at the full retail price of $200, it is 100% worth it. I really value my sleep. If I have a bad night’s sleep, my whole day is thrown off. So, for a hundred bucks, I think it’s a great value. My sleep quality has gone through the roof, and that’s nothing to say about the pure relief in stress I feel now!
Things that would’ve paralyzed me with fear before, now, are “just another hurdle” that I know I can handle. It feels so weird saying that a blanket gave me confidence, right? But it’s true! I am a cool and collected bad momma now!
Your sleep is one of the most important factors for your health. The Odyssey Blanket gives me that, plus much more. In fact, I’ve even gone ahead and ordered more for my husband and my kids. I’m so glad I invested in myself and my family by getting it. If it can do for them what it’s done for me, then we have some great moments ahead of us!

I never write reviews but thought I should after buying two of these blankets! I haven’t slept through the night for almost 6 years, thanks to a difficult pregnancy and baby. It trained my body to only sleep a couple hours at a time. I tried everything, and am shocked that a weighted blanket worked so magically! From restless legs, insomnia, anxiety, it is an instant fix! I have it draped over me while I write this and it feels amazing!
