July 13, 2015. Maureen Lewis was making the drive from her home in rural Pennsylvania to the University of North Carolina to see her son David graduate college. Maureen had been on the last leg of the trip. She started coming down a long winding hill, bearing to the left. Luckily, Maureen Lewis escaped the incident with only a few cuts and bruises, just five miles from her son’s apartment.

But for David, the close-call left him rattled and couldn't fathom the thought of losing his mother.
