Retired Couple Has Future Plans Ripped Away Due To Tragic Fall Caused By A Rug

When you think of retirement, the first thing that comes to mind is probably a sunny beach or RV trips; maybe even international travel. The last thing you think about is how you can work your whole life toward one goal and as soon as you get there, things come crashing down. No one wants the future they’ve worked a lifetime toward to be stolen away from them in the blink of an eye.

And yet, this is what happened to Scott and Jane Humphries.

Scott and Jane were happily married for 40 years at the time. A hardworking American family, they worked the same jobs, lived in the same town—they busted their tails to pay off the first and only home they lived in for their entire marriage, and they’re proud to say they own it outright. Sure, it’s a little outdated, a little worn around the edges, but the memories they created in this home over the years have been mostly good.

After working long hours for many years, the all-American couple decided it was finally time for them to retire. They had grand plans for their retirement, too—talked about traveling the world together and seeing all the places they had been too busy to see when they were working. Jane wanted to see the Louvre in Paris. Scott wanted to attend an Oktoberfest in Germany.

One fatal step changed everything.

“I was just getting up to get some water when my foot hit the edge of the rug and I fell.” Jane said. “After the fall, next thing I know I’m at the hospital. It was the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Jane ended up in the hospital with 7 stitches above her eyes and a fractured hip.

Unfortunately, Jane’s story isn’t a rare occurrence. Research shows that the most common cause of hip fractures for the elderly is tripping over rugs.

“Falls are one of the most common health concerns facing the elderly today. It is also extremely common for falls leading to fracture that requires hospital admission and can result in disability or even death,” says Conrado, a renowned doctor speaking at the annual meeting of the American Society of Health and Safety for Seniors.

Sadly, Jane was never able to fully recover and the retired couple was forced to scrap their travel plans.

“Our lives are changed, now,” Scott said. “Jane’s got to depend on me for a lot of things, now. She’s scared to walk around the house in case she falls again. It’s been crushing for me, seeing her go from an independent woman to living in fear of walking around her own house.”

The sting of losing those lifelong plans was real, and it hurt. But Scott wasn’t the kind of person to let things fester. He wasn’t going to hold an accident against his wife, and Jane already felt terrible enough being hurt—not to mention the fear of tripping and potentially hurting herself again.

“This was the house that we lived in all our married lives. I couldn’t stand there doing nothing, knowing my wife was scared to walk around her own home—basically scared to live, at that point. I couldn’t take it. I had to do something.” Scott said.

From that moment, Scot set out to create a device that he named “The RugStopper” to secure all the rugs in the house. Once he’d gotten it right, the RugStopper made every single rug in his home trip-proof. Jane would never have to worry about tripping or slipping over a rug again.

She’s been feeling much safer since Scott made the RugStopper.

“Are we sad about not being able to travel during our golden years?” Jane said, “Yes, of course. But at the end of the day, I’m just thankful to be able to feel safe walking around my house again and not needing to worry about falling or tripping over a rug. Most of all, I’m just so blessed to have a loving husband that did whatever it took to make me feel safe at home again.”

Scott says he’s had a huge weight lifted off his shoulders, too. Ever since he created the RugStopper and trip-proofed the rugs in their home, Jane and he have been able to focus a little more on spending time together.

“We believe things happen for a reason,” he said, “It may sound corny, but we believe this unfortunate stroke of luck happened so that we could invent the RugStopper and save others from suffering the same fate we did. Knowing that my invention is saving people from falling and seriously hurting themselves, it makes what happened that much easier to deal with.”

What Is The RugStopper & How Does It Work?

RugStoppers are one of those simple products that you don’t know how somebody only just thought up.

They’re a slide-proof system that keeps your rug stationary, and, keeps your rug’s corners stuck flat to the floor.

They’re similar to the stickers you can find in stores, but, they’re not oil-based, so they won’t damage your floor. In fact, since they use an adhesive gel instead of oils, their stickiness can actually be renewed simply by wetting them! (Unlike the stickers, which run out of stickiness after just a few weeks.)

And, they work on any floor, including laminate. (They even adhere to carpet.)

Plus, they make cleaning simple. All you do is lift them up and sweep or mop right over the pad on the floor. Then, you just put the rug back down and it’s locked firmly in place.

Millions of Americans have discovered RugStoppers…

Even though RugStoppers were only invented just over a year ago, it’s been hitting milestones left and right, with over 5 million units sold.

And, it’s all without being sold on TV! RugStoppers work so well, that most of its sales come from word of mouth.

But… Could it Really be worth All This Hype?

People are raving about RugStoppers on social media. These are just some of the posts I’ve come across:

RugStoppers have quickly developed a loyal following. With over 8,000 5-star reviews, here’s what customers are saying:

These are pretty great. I have a rottermann puppy who is huge and likes to do laps at full speed around the house. Could never keep the rug in place for more than an hour. I put the entire pack around the edges of a 5x7 rug. Wasn't messing around! That rug was gonna STAY! these things have kept it in place for over 6 months and still going strong!

Two throw rugs in the kitchen that are always moving away, flipping up, and annoying me. It took less than five minutes to position the RugStoppers, lay them on the floor and put the throw rugs on top. Easy peasy! The rugs have not moved an inch since installation. They both stay in place THANKS.

My 85 year old grandma has already had an accident by tripping and falling over a throw rug in her house. So when I heard about these Rug Stoppers, I knew I had to get them for her. My grandma absolutely loves them and she is so happy and thankful that I got them for her! Knowing that she is safer makes it totally worth it!
Scott and Jane's story hit close to home, so I needed to try these out for myself. Here's my experience...

I must admit, when I first heard about Scott and Jane's story, it struck a chord within me. 3 years ago, my 78 year old mother tripped over her rug and had a very bad fall. She hit her head on the table and hasn't been the same since. Her health has declined rapidly since the fall and has lost a lot of her independence. So when I heard about the rugstopper, I knew I had to try it out. I ordered them from the official website and they arrived in the mail just three days later.

Installation was a breeze, it only took a minute (literally).

All I had to do was follow 3 simple steps:

  1. Attach the transparent sticker to the bottom of the rug
  2. Attach the smooth side of the Rug Stoppers to the stickers
  3. Lay the rug flat on the floor

That’s it! Once they’re in place, there’s no moving them! (Trust me, I tried!)

Like I said, super easy!

And, over three months later, that rug has been put through the gamut!

The corners don’t come up when kicked anymore. My dogs don’t run in and slide ten feet across the hardwood like they’re riding some kind of magic carpet. And, I don’t have to worry about my mom getting seriously hurt when she comes to visit.

Here are some of the other rugs I used the RugStoppers on!

In fact, the Rug Stoppers worked so well, that I immediately ordered six more sets for all of the rugs in my mother's house. After securing all of her rugs with the RugStopper's, it has lifted a giant weight off of my shoulder knowing that I no longer have to worry about her tripping and falling over her rugs. The best part is that I can tell my mother feels safer moving around the house by herself! I just wish we had these sooner... It quite literally could have been the difference between life and death!

How much do they cost?

Is it worth it?

In a word: Absolutely. These things work like a charm and do exactly what they are supposed to do. It keeps your rugs in place to prevent slipping and keeps stubborn rug corners down flat to prevent tripping. But most of all, you can't put a price on you and your loved one's safety. I would give up anything and everything to go back in time and prevent my mother's fall. Remember, all it takes is one bad fall and it could change the trajectory of someone's life. Don't let that be you or your loved ones... Please stay safe!

These are super handy. I can't tell you how many times my kids have tripped while running around the livingroom. Now no more lifted edges and no more slipping!

Very easy to install, just peel and stick! And they are washable which is a huge plus when using them in a different spot.

Hands down the most practical purchase I've made for my living room. They hold the rug very well yet come off clean for moving and replacement, No damage to my rugs or flooring at all.

I wasn't expecting much from this, but it is doing a great job holding a 2.5 x 8.0 foot runner rug firmly where I want it. Thanks!

I was skeptical even with all the positive reviews that this thing would work - but it does! Rugs stay put.

I have an 8' runner that was acting more like a slide. These gripper pads gives me confidence to walk into that room without worry even if it's dark because the carpet doesn't budge.

The rug has not moved. Not. One. Single. Time. After hundreds of people coming and going. In a hardwood floor hallway.

I bought just one pack of these pades to test out on a macrame/knit style rug in a high traffic area, just to see if it would work. And the rug doesn't move AN INCH!

Tried several other things to keep a rug in place. These were the only ones that worked. Plus the shipping was fast and easy
