Master Chef Reveals Secret Trick To Cook The Perfect Steak Every Time

There I was on the grill. It was a Friday night in the middle of the dinner rush, and things were heating up. (Pun unfortunately intended.) That’s when I got the news that made my stomach drop.

Apparently, the food inspector chose this moment to grace us with his presence. He’s known to be a little… extreme when inspecting restaurants. For example, he’d raised hell on one of the chefs because his apron was tied in the front instead of in the back. One of those kinds of guys.

Except this time he wasn’t there to inspect the restaurant. He was there for a meal.

“No big deal,” you might say, “he’s only there to eat.” Well, that’s only half the story.

The server let me know which order was his when she put it in the computer. It read – “Two Medium-Rare Filets. Not rare! Not Medium! Medium-Rare!”

The message was clear: “Screw up these steaks and your life is hell next time I inspect this place.”

As a professional chef, of course I know how to cook a steak medium-rare. But it’s nice to have some insurance when everything must be perfect. Luckily, I had just the thing.

I had my ThermoGrill Digital Meat Thermometer magnetized to the pantry right next to the grill. And man, at this moment, I was glad that I did.

What is it?

I gotta tell you… this thing has saved my butt more times than I can count. It gets used any time there is an important and “particular” guest in the restaurant. There’s just no beating the fact that it’s a guaranteed perfect steak, every time.

And it’s not just steak, either. It’s good for making sure that all meats are cooked through. If you don’t cook meats to the correct temperatures (145° for pork, 160° for ground meats, and 165° for chicken, per the USDA), they’re at risk for E. Coli, Salmonella, and a host of other food-borne illnesses.

But no one wants to overcook the meat, either. Nothing’s worse than sitting down to enjoy a nice juicy steak, and instead biting into a piece of leather. That’s why, if you’re a chef-at-home, you need this thermometer.

And, this thing works fast. It has a 3-4 second response time, so you know right away if you need to keep the meat on a little longer, or if it’s time to take it off. Plus, the accuracy is guaranteed within one degree. (Trust me, that’s pretty darn good, even in high-end restaurants like mine.)

The display is nice and easy to read, so there’s no wasting time squinting and trying to make sense of what it’s trying to say. It tells you, plain as day. This thing is THE meat thermometer. Otherwise, I wouldn’t own it.

Everybody Seems To Be Getting In On This Trend

People across the country are enjoying their perfectly-cooked meats, courtesy of ThermoGrill. In fact, ThermoGrill has even been found Michelin star restaurants. And, it’s the number-one electronic meat thermometer used by celebrity chefs. But, they’re not the only ones using it...

So far, ThermoGrill has sold over 1 million units, and people are enjoying this simple, yet effective thermometer for cooking all kinds of food.

  • Steak
  • Beef, Pork or Lamb Roasts
  • Hamburgers, Steaks or Chops
  • Whole Poultry
  • Whole Turkey
  • Poultry Parts
  • Ground Meat and Poultry
  • Egg Dishes and Casseroles
  • Fish
  • And more...
But… Is it Really Worth All This Hype?

Since its debut, ThermoGrill has been in a state of constant flux, shifting between IN STOCK to SOLD OUT nearly every other week, and it’s also amassed tons of loyal followers—from professional chefs worldwide to the backyard bbq dad at home. Everyone’s tasting the difference.

ThermoGrill has quickly developed a cult following. Here are some customer reviews:

"It’s amazing how fast you get a stable temp. Just a couple of seconds and you can close the lid on your grill. The cheaper ones take forever and your grill fire can get out of control while you’re checking a temp. ThermoGrill is the way to go."

- Julian Mcdonald

"Hands down the best thermometers! I have even given several as gifts because I believe they are the best and all the lucky folks that have received them as gifts from me agree!"

- Dennis Hines

"This was a great find before I start my holiday cooking. Arrived ready to use in good, safe packaging. Turned on as soon as I opened with big, easy to read indicator, Tried it in a roast chicken and easy to operate with accurate results. Definitely a good buy."

- Donald Adams

I’m not the only professional chef who’s willing to stick his neck out for ThermoGrill. Here’s what Damienne Goodreau, star of Grill Gods: Atlanta, had to say:

I’ve been cooking for 15 years, and ThermoGrill has absolutely blown me away with its quality. As everyone knows, things get pretty heated as we have to run around like a chicken with our heads cut off while trying to grill these ridiculous meals, so having that insurance and knowing that the meat’s cooked the way it should be… it just really makes things so much easier for me.

In fact, the ThermoGrill is the ONLY electronic meat thermometer we use on the show now. (But, I liked it much better when I was the only one using it!)

Simply the best there is

And I mean it. I’ve tried others, and they just don’t cut it. When I started this job, I decided to get a storebought digital thermometer for insurance against picky guests. You know, just in case. But, that thing couldn’t be relied on to tell ice from fire. Sometimes, I’d put it in the same cut of meat three times, and it’d give me three different readings!

I also had an old (like, ancient) needle thermometer. The truth is, it just was too big to keep in my drawer anymore. (Plus, I always felt like I was going to stab my hand on it by accident. That’s why I like that the ThermoGrill folds up.)

Now, I’m a picky guy. So, after my first digital thermometer failed me, I decided to go for broke. I ordered three different digital thermometers, and decided to test them against each other.

The ThermoGrill arrived after two days, and I had to wait another few for the others. Then, once they all arrived, it was time for the showdown...

The meat thermometer gauntlet…

The test would be to cook 3 steaks on the grill simultaneously, so they’d all be the same temperature. I’d then check the new digital thermometers against the reading from my reliable old-school giant thermometer. I’d compare for accuracy (the number-one priority). Here’s what happened...

The first thermometer quite frankly stunk. It looked kind of like a syringe, so the needle wasn’t foldable or retractable at all. Not something I want to blindly rummage through a drawer for (the whole reason I was switching to a new digital thermometer). And, when I checked the temperature reading against Old Reliable, it was off 20 degrees. That simply wasn’t going to cut it...

The second thermometer looked a lot like the ThermoGrill. They both have a nice foldable design so you don’t stab yourself when you’re reaching for it, like the first one. I stuck it in the first steak and waited. And waited. And waited. When it eventually did show a number (about 30 seconds later), it read 135°. Then, I had to stick it in the second steak three times before it even gave me a reading. Too unreliable, and, therefore, junk.

The last one was the ThermoGrill. Man, I really saved the best for last. When I stuck the needle in the steak, the temperature showed after about two seconds. (After the last one, I was really surprised when it worked that fast.) And, when I checked it against “old reliable,” the readings were exactly the same! It was like that for all three steaks, which meant it was perfectly consistent. Mission Accomplished, ladies and gentlemen, pack it up, we’re going home!

Another great feature that I didn’t even realize when I ordered it is that it’s magnetic. Hanging it in a convenient place right next to the grill is a lifesaver, especially in a busy restaurant like mine.

The Verdict:

The Thermogrill is the best digital meat thermometer, hands down. Cooking the perfect steak is no-sweat when using the ThermoGrill, and there’s no need to worry about over- or under-cooking, even with poultry.

How much is it?

The ThermoGrill comes in at a cool $30. And, in my opinion, that’s well worth it for the quality, reliability, and speed you get. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better digital meat thermometer than this one.

What happened with the inspector, anyway?

He gave his compliments to the chef, of course.

I've bought several similar models of this type of product, and this is by far the best. Fast read; big numbers for old eyes; good back-light for display; accurate; probe has a small point so you don't let a lot of juice out when you test temp. PErfect!

Does this really work? If so, how does it compare to other meat thermometers out there?

YES! Compared to other thermometers I've tried I can safely say that this is an awesome meat thermometer, the needle is long enough to go through thicker cuts of meat. I cooked a prime rib over Thanksgiving and this thermometer worked perfectly. The digital face is big and the display is easy and bright on the eyes.

Love this thermometer! No more waiting for the other not so instant read thermometers to find the temperature while holding them in place over a hot fire. Saves me from a burning hand lol
